Woman in Front of mic for coaching business without a big budget

Business Roadmap for new coaches

Design a business plan for your coaching business

So you want to start a coaching business and actually make money?

You’re in the right place. Let me give you the real roadmap—no fluff, no overpriced guru funnel required.

This is the exact framework I use with my clients to help them grow to 6-figures (and beyond) in their first couple of years online. It’s step-by-step, doable without a massive budget, and designed to build something that lasts. I have helped hundreds of coaches get there (see testimonials here: https://www.stephaniefiteni.com/client-praise/)

Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Start With (Real) Clarity on Your Ideal Clientto design a great business plan

Yes, you’ve heard it before. But this isn’t just about filling in a worksheet or naming a demographic. You need actual clarity—the kind that comes from talking to real humans and understanding how they describe their struggles, goals, and desires.

If you’re still unclear, that’s OK. I recommend an hourglass approach: Start with 2–3 potential client types, then narrow down after a few free sessions and conversations. Don’t just guess—immerse yourself in their world. Show up in their online communities. Talk to them. Listen. Ask better questions.

Want to speed it up? Create a simple questionnaire. Offer a free mini-session in exchange for their insights (and maybe a testimonial). Real data trumps assumptions every time.

Step 2: Build an Offer That Actually Solves a Problem

Once you’re clear on who you want to help, create an offer tailored to their struggles and outcomes. Your package should feel like a no-brainer.

This includes:

  • A clear promise/outcome
  • A process or method (even if it’s version 1.0)
  • A pricing strategy that aligns with your goals and their commitment level

Pro tip: You don’t need a fancy program to start. Begin with 1:1 coaching so you can refine your process, deepen your understanding of your clients, and collect testimonials as you go.

Step 3: Dial In Your Messaging

Messaging isn’t just marketing lingo—it’s how you connect. The clearer you are on your ideal client’s pain points and desires, the easier it is to create content, emails, and offers that actually resonate.

Good messaging answers this question: “Do they feel like I get them?”

Step 4: Choose Your Long-Term & Short-Term Visibility Strategies

Group of colleagues discussing marketing strategies with laptop, tablet, and documents.

You don’t need to be everywhere. You do need a long-term strategy that stacks (like SEO, blogs, or YouTube) and a short-term strategy that gets you visible now (like social media or local networking).

I recommend:

  • Long-term: SEO-optimized blogs, YouTube, or podcasting (content that compounds)
  • Short-term: Repurpose that content into social posts to build immediate awareness
  • Offline: Don’t ignore the power of in-person connections—especially when you’re starting out

Most new coaches need cash flow fast. Don’t wait for SEO to kick in. Meet people, talk about your work, and book calls. Your offline network is a goldmine.

Step 5: Track, Measure, and Refine

The coaches who grow fastest are the ones who listen best.

Track:

  • Where your leads come from
  • What content converts
  • What questions your audience is asking
  • What results your clients are getting

This creates a feedback loop that sharpens your niche, offer, and marketing over time. Rinse, repeat, grow.

This is the business roadmap I wish someone handed me when I started. It cuts through the noise and helps you get real results.
